Copeland Roberts - Auction 9, Lot 548
During 1804, there was a great shortage of coinage in Great Britain as the mints struggled to keep up with demand both domestic and from the colonies. To resolve this, the Bank of England imported Spanish silver 8 reale coins, which were then all restruck and revalued at five shillings, or one dollar, then distributed as official British coinage.
This present example, although cleaned in the past, still retains good detail. Grades Fine, or slightly better.
