Lot description:

KM# 285.2 (A&C# UNCAT) – 8 Reales (Sin fechar) Morelos y Chilpancingo. Resellos: AU.

ENGLISH:

KM# 285.2 (A&C# UNCAT) – 8 Reales (Undated) Morelos and Chilpancingo. Countermarks: AU. Host: NGC AU53. TOP POP. Combination of insurgent countermarks: Morelos type "A", partially overlapping the Chilpancingo type "A" countermark. Both applied to the obverse of the typical 8 Reales host coin, cast in low-fineness silver, using an 1810 Mo HJ Armored Bust 8 Reales (KM#110, A&C#1314) as the model for the mold. The alloy consists of 0.6697 silver, 0.3281 copper, 0.00122 lead, and 0.000958 iron. Both countermarks grade AU; the Morelos countermark is exceptionally well struck, while the Chilpancingo countermark is somewhat weaker, as is typical when these countermarks are combined. Overall, this piece offers an extraordinary state of preservation and quality of manufacture, notably superior to the standard for the type. It has a plain edge with faint filing marks, characteristic of this issue, surfaces free of significant marks or damage, and is covered with a uniform dark patina. Highest grade currently reported in the population reports, shared by only one other example listed in the NGC Census. As a reference, lot no. 44 from our Auction #7, held on March 8, 2024, realized MX$27,600.00 including buyer's premium. That specimen was certified by PCGS as F Tooled, making the present specimen considerably more desirable, particularly given the strong demand for this type among collectors of the Mexican War of Independence.

Estimate: 33800 - 37500 MXN
