SOUTHERN HAN: Anonymous, 900-971, lead cash (3.2g), yong ping yuan bao, graded 78(05) by GBCA Grading Company, natural flan crack, VF, ex Dr. Dirk Löer Collection. These were part of a series of crude lead cash coins attributed to the Southern Han / Chu area cast circa 900-971 based on Tang Dynasty inscriptions. There is a very great variety of such coins; some have crescents on the reverse, others a variety of characters. The 'kai' character sometimes looks like the character 'yong.' The characters and legends often are reversed because the incompetent workmen had not mastered the art of engraving in negative to make the molds. Some specimens have meaningless characters.

WESTERN XIA: Da An, 1068-1086, AE cash (3.9g), H-18.91, t-ha-h ray lee ndzen in Tangut script (da an bao qian in Chinese), graded 78(05) by GBCA Grading Company, natural flan crack, F-VF, ex Dr. Dirk Löer Collection. The Tangut script (xi xià wén) was a logographic writing system, used for writing the extinct Tangut language of the Western Xia Dynasty. Tangut characters are similar in appearance to Chinese characters, with the same type of strokes, but the methods of forming characters in the Tangut writing system are significantly different from those of forming Chinese characters. There are only five coin types in Tangut script and all are very rare.
