SOUTHERN HAN: Anonymous, 900-971, lead cash (3.3g), H-15.136, kai yuan tong bao // jin yi, graded 80 by GBCA Grading Company, VF, ex Dr. Dirk Löer Collection. These were part of a series of crude lead cash coins attributed to the Southern Han / Chu area cast circa 900-971 based on Tang Dynasty inscriptions. There is a very great variety of such coins; some have crescents on the reverse, others a variety of characters. The 'kai' character sometimes looks like the character 'yong.' the characters and legends often are reversed because the incompetent workmen had not mastered the art of engraving in negative to make the molds. Some specimens have meaningless characters.
