| Lot description: ABBASID OF YEMEN: al-Mutawakkil, 847-861, AR dirham (5.18g), AH"200", A-1053N, citing Ja'far below the obverse, with the mint/date formula bi-makiya sana wa mi'tayn, with the mint name either makka with an extra tooth or madina missing one tooth, now regarded as a contemporary imitation from eastern sources (modern Afghanistan or Pakistan), perhaps intended as a souvenir for the Hajj; probably finest known example of this interesting type, VF-XF, RRR. The name Ja'far appears below the obverse field, known on Yemeni gold dinars of al-Wathiq struck at San'a and dated AH232 and of al-Mutawakkil dated 234-235. Estimate: 400-500 USD |
