Lot description:

DENMARK. Capture of Stralsund, Restrike Silver Medal, 1715. Frederik IV. NGC MS-67.
Galster-362; Ossbahr-189; JS-623; Bruun-15516. Diameter: 34 mm. Weight: 24 gms. Exceptional condition, untouched and perfectly toned.

The Hanseatic port of Stralsund was the stronghold of Swedish Pomerania and it took a several year-long siege by the combined forces of Denmark, Prussia, Saxony and Russia to finally make the city surrender on the 23rd of December 1715. King Karl (Charles) XII of Sweden, who had been in more or less voluntary exile in the Ottoman Empire since 1709, rode from Bender (present day Moldova) to help defend the city. Before its surrender, he escaped to Sweden.

While the medalist and mint is unknown, Copenhagen is the likeliest candidate as the dies are kept here.

From the L. E. Bruun Collection.
