Iconic and Excessively Rare Commemorative Type
DENMARK. 4 Mark (Krone), 1659. Copenhagen Mint. Frederik III. NGC AU Details--Plugged.
Dav-3578; KM-Pn15; Hede-102; Sieg-55; Schou-37; Bruun-6288. Weight: 21.43 gms. Excessively rare pattern only known in a handful of examples. Although the present coin has been plugged, the details are all excellent and traces of the original luster remains. The only other example known in private ownership was also previously in the Bruun collection but was sold as a duplicate in the 1925 (catalog # 2501).

This iconic type was struck to commemorate the failure of the Swedish king, Carl X Gustav, to capture Copenhagen. The monogram of King Frederik III is shown above a stone with the text EBEN EZER, referring to the Old Testament (1 Samuel 7:12) in which Samuel erected a "stone of help" (Eben-ha-Ezer) between Mizpah and Jeshanah to honor the Lord for his help in securing the Israelites a victory over the Philistines.

The Latin inscription on the reverse, SOLI DEO GLORIA, is another tribute to God ("To God alone be the glory") while the dramatic design shows the hand of God (Manus Dei) severing the hand of the Swedish king with the sword of justice as he reaches out for the Danish crown.

Normally considered a pattern, the varying weights of the few examples know combined with the fact that this example has clearly been carried, might suggest that this elusive issue was struck to be used as a distinction given to personnel from the civic guard who had distinguished themselves during the siege.

From the L. E. Bruun Collection.

Ex: Joh. G. Guildal Collection (Private Sale - 1918); later published by the Danish Numismatic Society as item 1376 in his collection and illustrated on page 232 of the catalog.

Estimate: 6000 - 8000
