In 1810, the aging and childless Karl XIII of Sweden adopted Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, a French marshal, who became Crown Prince Karl XIV Johan. The sudden death of the previous heir left Sweden in urgent need of a strong successor, and Bernadotte's military reputation, administrative skill, and good standing among Swedish officers made him a compelling choice. After election by the Riksdag, Karl XIII formally adopted him on 21 August 1810.
