The Battle of Breitenfeld in 1631 marked a decisive turning point in the Thirty Years' War and transformed the fortunes of the Protestant cause. Until this moment, the Catholic League under Count Tilly had enjoyed a long stretch of victories, leaving Protestant states weakened and demoralized. When Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden entered the conflict, he brought with him a modern, highly disciplined army whose tactical innovations would reshape the battlefield. At Breitenfeld, the combined Swedish and Saxon forces faced Tilly's seasoned Imperial army. Although the Saxons broke early under attack, the Swedish lines held firm. Gustavus Adolphus's flexible formations, effective integration of infantry, cavalry, and mobile artillery, and his ability to exploit the enemy's rigid tercio structure proved decisive. A sweeping Swedish cavalry maneuver on the Imperial flank shattered Tilly's cohesion and turned the battle into a devastating victory. This triumph did more than defeat an army-it revived the Protestant war effort. Breitenfeld ended the aura of Catholic invincibility, restored confidence among Protestant states, and opened central Germany to Swedish advances. From this point onward, the conflict's momentum shifted dramatically, making Breitenfeld the moment when the future of the Protestant cause changed.AR 75 mm. 58.87 g. R. Choice. PCGS MS61.
