| Lot description: India British India. Madras Presidency "Fame" gold Mohur ND (1819) AU Details (Brushed) NGC, Madras mint, KM421.2, Fr-1587. Small lettering variety. Accompanied by COA. Salvaged from the "Fame" (sunk in 1822 off of Sea Point, South Africa). A rather charming East India company type that continues to draw the attention of type-Collectors. Maintaining respectable visual appeal when observed in hand. The Fame, a cargo ship, was en route from India to London in 1822 when it crashed into a rocky part of Table Bay while departing Cape Town. There is no remaining ship's log, but it is known that multiple chests of coins went down with the stern of the ship. The wreck site was discovered in 1965 with coins scattered over a large area of the seafloor. www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice https://coins.ha.com/itm/india/british-india/india-british-india-madras-presidency-fame-gold-mohur-nd-1819-au-details-brushed-ngc-/a/61563-24125.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchives-WorldCoins-61563-11112025 HID02906262019 © 2025 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved Certification number: Details NGC 8568684001 |
