ETATIS SVÆ. 32nd Year of his Age; facing three-quarter length figure of the Elector, holding sword over his right shoulder and shield surmounted by electoral cap. Reverse; SPES MEA IN DEO EST ANNO NOSTRI SALVATORI M. D. X. X. X. V [My Hope is in God in the Year of Our Saviour 1535]; tri-helmeted, elaborate shield of arms. Johann Friedrich was a dedicated supporter of Martin Luther, whose side he took in the early religious controversies and later active warfare triggered by the split in the Western church. The Duke was a patron of this great German medalist, and his bust was inspired by paintings of Lucas Cranach the Elder.

Obverse: The king's body lies in repose at the battle of Lützen, as the battle continues in the distance with putti on clouds of smoke arising from the continuing conflict. Reverse; The king holding an open Bible and sword being transported in a chariot, drawn by three winged horses, which trample a hydra below.
