Lot description:

PERU, Lima, gold cob 8 escudos, 1711 M, NGC MS 63 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), ex-Katz (cover coin), ex-McGregor. S-L28; Cal-2119; KM-38.2; Fr-7. 26.86 grams. Good luster and mostly bold strike, with full cross-lions-castles and pillars-and-waves (very slightly doubled), particularly bold (R)EXANO to left of nearly full crown, well-centered strike. Regarding its pedigree, Wallace Katz was an active collector in Las Vegas and no doubt appreciated this coin for its 7-11 date, as mentioned by Flemming on his certificate. From the 1715 Fleet, with Philip Flemming photo-certificate from 2019, pedigreed to the Wallace Katz Collection (Morton & Eden auction of May 2010, lot 219, pictured on the catalog cover) and to the McGregor Collection (stated on label).

Estimate: 15000 - 22500 USD

Broad flan with much legend including full king's name and bottoms of 12 of date, bold full pillars-and-waves and cross-lions-castles (both well centered), somewhat lustrous and with traces of encrustation, rusty-die surfaces. From the 1715 Fleet.

PERU, Lima, gold cob 2 escudos, 1709 M, NGC MS 65 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), "top pop," ex-McGregor. S-L28; Cal-1827; KM-36; Fr-9. 6.75 grams. Highly lustrous with very sharp, crisp details in the full cross-lions-castles and pillars-and-waves, also with choice 100% full crown with bold (R)EXA to its left (proving at least the intent to put a second date in the legend that early, the A standing for ANO = year), clear PHILIPPVS, tied with two others (inexplicably listed as "1709 Philip V") for finest in the NGC census. From the 1715 Fleet, with Sedwick photo-certificate, pedigreed to the McGregor Collection (stated on label).

Estimate: 10000 - 20000 USD

Astoundingly lustrous and light in color with surfaces that Flemming says "look like they came from the mint yesterday," with sharply detailed full cross-lions-castles and pillars-and-waves on a broad flan enabling much legend ending in a full HISPANI, also with 7 of second date in legend next to crown (hence 10 was not on the die). Note: weight is stated on label erroneously as 16.72 grams. From the 1715 Fleet (South Colored Beach site, now known as Douglass Beach), with original Cobb Coin Co. (Mel Fisher) photo-certificate 16988 and Philip Flemming photo-certificate from 2013, pedigreed to the McGregor Collection (stated on label).
