Ernst August (1674–1698), Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and later Elector of Hanover, played a key role in laying the foundations for the rise of the House of Hanover. Although his own reign was relatively short, his most significant achievement was securing the Electoral dignity for his line in 1692, elevating Hanover's status within the Holy Roman Empire. This move positioned his family for greater political influence in Europe. Most importantly, he was the father of George I of Great Britain, and through his efforts, the House of Hanover became closely tied to the English crown-ultimately leading to the Hanoverian succession in Britain in 1714.
