Ernst August, 1679-1698, from 1661 Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück, from 1692 Elector 10 Ducats 1685, Clausthal mint, mint master Heinrich Bonhorst, AV 34.72 g. ERN AUG D G EP - OS D BR ET LUN Armoured and draped bust facing right. Rev. SOLA BONA QUAE HONESTA Five-helmeted 12-field coat of arms with shield of Osnabrück as inescutcheon above a scroll, flanked by the mint master's initials H - B, above the year 16-85. Reeded edge. F. 572 ('very rare'), Fiala -; Knigge -; Knyphausen -; Welter -. Possibly unique. Struck with the taler dies (Dav. 6636). Some hairlines otherwise virtually as struck, almost Fdc NGC MS 61 (2175164-007) Ex Glendining, London sale 7.7.1938, no. 56 ("unknown even as a taler from the Ducal Cabinet of Gotha, a great rarity in beautiful state"). Ernst August (1674–1698), Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and later Elector of Hanover, played a key role in laying the foundations for the rise of the House of Hanover. Although his own reign was relatively short, his most significant achievement was securing the Electoral dignity for his line in 1692, elevating Hanover's status within the Holy Roman Empire. This move positioned his family for greater political influence in Europe. Most importantly, he was the father of George I of Great Britain, and through his efforts, the House of Hanover became closely tied to the English crown-ultimately leading to the Hanoverian succession in Britain in 1714.
