GREAT BRITAIN: Victoria, 1837-1901, AR medal, MYB-124, The Abyssinian War Medal; left facing effigy of a diademed Queen Victoria, around the edge is a stylized border with indentions; between the indentions are the letters ABYSSINIA // awarded to J. MURPHY / A.B (Able Rate) / H.M.S. DAPHNE, with new ribbon, AU. The Abyssinian War Medal was awarded for service between October 4, 1867 and April 19, 1868 to those who participated in the 1868 Expedition to Abyssinia. This punitive expedition, led by Lieutenant-General Sir Robert Napier, was carried out by the armed forces of the British Empire against the Ethiopian Empire. Emperor Tewodros II of Ethiopia imprisoned several missionaries and two representatives of the British government. About 14,000 medals were awarded, 12,000 to the British and Indian armies and only 1,981 to the Royal Navy, such as this example. The HMS Daphne was built at the Pembroke Dockyard and launched on October 23, 1866. She spent her entire career east of Suez, in the East Indies, and particularly on anti-slavery operations on the east coast of Africa.

GREAT BRITAIN: Victoria, 1837-1901, AR medal, 1842, MY-110, The China War Medal; diademed head of Queen Victoria with the legend VICTORIA REGINA // shield bearing the Royal coat of arms with a palm tree and trophy of arms behind, with the inscription ARMIS EXPOSCERE PACIM above and CHINA / 1842 in the exergue below, a non-swiveling suspender is plain and straight being sweated directly to the medal as made, with new ribbon, awarded to GEORGE PARKINS, H.M.S BELLEISLE, AU. The China War Medal was issued by the British Government in 1843 to members of the British and Indian forces who took part in the First Opium War (1839-42). The medal was designed by William Wyon. In 1843, under the direction of Queen Victoria, the British Government authorized its award to all members of the British Army, Royal Navy and the Indian Army and Navy, who had belonged to units that had "served with distinction" in China between July 5, 1840 and August 29, 1842. This campaign became known as the First Opium War, ending in the seizure of Nanking. The resultant treaty opened five ports to trade, and ceded Hong Kong to Great Britain.The HMS Belleisle was converted to serve as a troopship in 1841 and sailed for China in Dec. 1841 for the First Opium War. She stayed in China until the Treaty of Nanking was signed in 1842.

g Victoria (1837-1901), gold Half-Sovereign, 1887, London Mint, Jubilee style bust facing left, with a raised bulge in metal in front of neck, small crown and veil on head, I.E.B. initials close together raised with imperfect J, arranged lower on truncation with letters and stops halfway intruding the field, legend and toothed border surrounding, VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, rev. crowned quartered high shield of arms, date below either side of bottom of frame, legend commences lower left with toothed border surrounding, BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:, weight 4.00g (DISH L508; Hill 478F; Bull EGC 1359; S.3869). Toned, some light hairlines in fields with surface marks, almost extremely fine, unusual with the raised area by neck.Calendar year mintage 841,200.The Latin legend translates on obverse as Victoria by the Grace of God, and on the reverse Queen of the Britons, Defender of the Faith.Note this coin has the I.E.B. placed lower on the shoulder than previous coins and protrudes into the field below.
