Montagu, Sotheby's, 24-29 May 1897, lot 160Prince Rupert: grandson of James I, third son of King Frederick and Queen Elizabeth (Stuart) of Bohemia, nephew of Charles I, Count Palatine of Rhine, Duke of Bavaria, Duke of Cumberland and Earl of Holderness. Prominent in the Royalist forces, in 1642 he was appointed General of the Horse and, having secured the Crown its first victory of the war, at Worcester, he fought at several historic civil war battles including Naseby and Marston Moor. Following the Commonwealth's victory, he left England returning after the Restoration to serve in the Navy under James, Duke of York. He was Admiral of the White fighting at both Lowestoft (see lot 428) and at Solebay, and ultimately received the title General at Sea and Land. Courageous and irascible in equal measure, he remains one of the most romantic Cavalier figures in British history. Starting price: 10000 GBP | ![]() |
