Lot description: SWITZERLAND Bern Undated gold medal (circa 1741), by Jean Dassier (unsigned). View of the city of Bern. Above, the city's coat of arms. In exergue, the name BERNA / Draped and cuirassed bust of Berthold V of Zähringen on the left, holding a sword in his right hand. 39,5mm. 30,05g. Eisler pl. XXI var.; Haller 746; Schweizer Medaillen 574 var. (silver). Extremely fine . Berthold V of Zähringen succeeded his father Berthold IV in 1186. He imposed his power over the Burgundian nobility, and occupied what is now the Bernese Oberland and the Lake Lucerne region. He enlarged the city of Thun and founded Bern in 1191. The new city became the center of his territory. Following the death of the Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI in 1198, he was one of the candidates in the Imperial election. However, when he discovered that a majority had elected Philip of Swabia he renounced his claim. In exchange for this renunciation, Berthold gained territories in southern Germany and northern Switzerland (Ortenau, Breisgau, Schaffhausen and Vieux-Brisach).
