Russia 1 Kopek 1595 (ND) Contemporary Imitations
Silver 0.61 g.; "English" imitative coinage produced during reign of Fedor Ivanovich; Kopeck of Pskov; Obv: horseman grasping spear with both hands. Rev: legend (with name of Ivan) in five lines; Extremely rare. These rare contemporary imitations of authorized coinage were produced to a high standard, and Mel'nikova (1989) considered that it was most likely that they were imported by traders acting under the auspices of the English Muscovy Company. However, the common conclusion of more recent authors is that they were produced by Baltic die-sinkers (see e.g. contribution by S Zverev in Proceedings of the XIVth International Numismatic Congress, Glasgow, 2011, p.1783); VF
