De VOC in Voor-Indië / VOC, Dutch India - Dutch-Ceylon (Sri Lanka) - AE 4 ¾ Stiver or ½ larin (62,21 g; 75.7 x 27.25 x 8.0stiver mm). Colombo, ND (1785). (Scho. 1295a; Passon 53.10) It was decided by a Res. of Colombo dated 1785 Oct. 20, to strike half copper larins in the shape of small bars with two round countermarks on either end and declare them current at the rate of 4 ¾ Indian stivers or half larin, because the rate of the silver larin in 1785 was 9½ stivers. This is the reason for this rather odd denomination and for this reason also one of the most commonly imitated VOC-coin of Ceylon. Genuine examples therefore are rarely offered for sale. Obv.: Two round countermarks stamped on either end of bar; within a rim of beads outside a plain circle. On the left VOC-monogram, surmounted by C (Colombo), on right 4 ¾ / S T. De VOC in Voor-Indië / VOC, Dutch India - Tuticorin - AV pagoda (3.39 g.) (Scho. 1259; Passon 48.1) Obv. Rather crude standing Vishnu / rev.: convex and granulated surface. llikely struck at Tuticorin or Colombo during 1760-1794. From about 1760 Porto Novo Pagodas of the new Negapatnam die (1747 issue) were struck at Tuticorin. (weight 3.406 g., fineness 0,800). These issues probably can't be distinguished from the Negapatnam issues. The fineness, as in Negapatnam, was decreased in 1767 to 0,769. During the period of the Anglo-Dutch war, the mint for precious metals was shifted from Tuticorin to Colombo (1780-1786). During this period Porto Novo Pagodas, with a fineness of 0,625, were struck at Colombo. After the mint at Tuticorin was re-established again (August 1786), the minting of Pagodas seems to have continued till the closure of the mint in 1794.
The low gold content indicates that this coin may have been struck at Colombo or during the period 1786-1794 at Tuticorin. Other than by the gold contents, there is no way to distinguish between the issues of either Negapatnam, Tuticorin or Colombo. aXF
