Lot description: Italy "Torquato Tasso" bronze Medal 1895-Dated MS64 Brown NGC, 66mm. By L. Giorgi. A seemingly quite scarce medal as the present cataloger was unable to locate other examples than one piece recorded at the National Roman Museum collections. Engraved by Italian goldsmith Luigi Giorgi (1848-1912), who was appointed Chief Engraver of the Royal Mint in Rome 1906, and whose name is perhaps most familiar to numismatic world from his work on Chinese coinage. Accompanied by original case of issue. Torquato Tasso (1544–1595) emerged as a prominent Italian poet in the 16th century, celebrated for his epic poem "Gerusalemme liberata" (Jerusalem Delivered) penned in 1591. In this work, he offers a richly imaginative retelling of the battles between Christians and Muslims during the final phase of the First Crusade, specifically the Siege of Jerusalem in 1099. https://coins.ha.com/itm/italy/italy-torquato-tasso-bronze-medal-1895-dated-ms64-brown-ngc-/a/61387-24156.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchives-WorldCoins-61387-05132024 HID02906262019 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved |
