| Lot description: SPAIN, Seville, gold cob 2 escudos, Philip III, assayer G, PCGS MS61 (Santa Margarita). Cal-197; KM-20. 6.83 grams. Unlike the hundreds of thousands of silver cobs found on the Atocha and Santa Margarita, only a handful of gold cobs were recovered from these wrecks, making them very rare and important trophies for shipwreck collectors. With the exception of some samples from Colombia, all these gold cobs are from Spain, and must have been on the ships before they picked up coin cargoes in the New World. Because these coins are readily available from non-wreck sources, it is critical for such coins to have original Fisher certification, which is the case here, bolstered by high-grade certification from PCGS as well. This example shows a well-centered strike with full cross-and-tressure and bold full shield, showing clear inner portions of mintmark-assayer S-G to left and denomination •II• to right, with a couple interesting shear-marks and splits in edge (as made) and faint sediment in crevices.
