Lot description: FRANCE, Louis XVIII. 1815-R. Gold 20 Francs (6.37 gm; 21 mm). London mint. Obv: portrait of the king facing right, lettering "LOUIS XVIII ROI DES FRANCE" around, Rev: a crowned shield with three fleur-des-lis in it, all within a laurel wreath, denomination, lettering, date, and mint mark 'R' around. Fr. 531; KM 707. Struck during the exile of Louis XVIII in London. It is said that these fascinating issues were minted, for the most part, to fund British troops in France.
