Lot description: The Geoffrey Cope Collection of British Coins. James I. 1603-1625. Proof AR Shilling (30.5mm, 6.06 g, 11h). Second coinage. London mint; im: tun. Struck 1615-1616. Crowned fifth bust right; XII (mark of value) to right / Coat-of-arms. Oddie, James P1 (dies O1/R1); North 2101; SCBC 2656 (this coin illustrated). A beautiful coin, crisply struck on a perfectly round flan. Superb EF. Extremely rare. Ex Slaney (Part I, Spink 163, 15 May 2003), lot 35; E.C. Carter Collection (purchased en bloc by Baldwin's, 1950); J.G. Murdoch (Sotheby, Wilkinson, & Hodge, 31 March 1903), lot 761; S. Rostron (Sotheby, Wilkinson, & Hodge, 16 May 1892), lot 204; T.F. Dymock (Sotheby & Wilkinson, 1 June 1858), lot 285; J.D. Cuff (Sotheby & Wilkinson, 8 June 1854), lot 1098.
