An excellent example of this infamous type.
Richly toned with much iridescence.
Good VF. Rare thus.

Ex F. Brady (Spink 209, 6 October 2011), lot 305; Spink Numismatic Circular XCIV (March 1987), no. 1372.
Article 40 of the indictment against Cardinal Wolsey cites the Groats struck at York bearing Wolsey's initials and cardinal's hat on reverse. The terms of Wolsey's indenture only provided for Halfgroats and the smaller denominations. This Groat is emblematic of the over reach of an ambitious cardinal who could achieve almost anything except, notoriously, secure the king's divorce.
