| Lot description: The Geoffrey Cope Collection of British Coins. Henry VIII. 1509-1547. AR Groat (25mm, 2.59 g, 2h). Second coinage. York mint, under Archbishop Thomas Wolsey; im: voided cross. Struck 1526-1530. Crowned and draped right (Laker D) / Coat-of-arms over long cross fourchée; saltires in forks, T W flanking, tasseled gallero below at base of cross. Whitton (i); North 1799; SCBC 2339. An excellent example of this infamous type. Richly toned with much iridescence. Good VF. Rare thus. Ex F. Brady (Spink 209, 6 October 2011), lot 305; Spink Numismatic Circular XCIV (March 1987), no. 1372. Article 40 of the indictment against Cardinal Wolsey cites the Groats struck at York bearing Wolsey's initials and cardinal's hat on reverse. The terms of Wolsey's indenture only provided for Halfgroats and the smaller denominations. This Groat is emblematic of the over reach of an ambitious cardinal who could achieve almost anything except, notoriously, secure the king's divorce. Estimate: 1000 CHF |  |
