Ahmad Durrani, son of Mohammad Zaman Khan Abdali, was born in 1722. He is the founder of the Durrani Dynasty. Ahmad was the commander of the Abdali Regiment in Nader Shah's army. In 1751 he captured Neishapour and Mashhad which were ruled by Nader's grandson Shahrokh, who was eventually pardoned by the new ruler. Ahmad Durrani died on October 16, 1772, in Maruf, Qandahar.
The Durrani Dynasty, established by Ahmad Shah Durrani in 1747, played a crucial role in the shaping of Afghanistan as a unified nation-state. Ahmad Shah, also known as Ahmad Shah Durrani or Ahmad Shah Abdali, rose to power after leading a successful Afghan tribal confederation against Persian and Indian forces. He founded the Durrani Empire, with its capital in Kandahar, which encompassed parts of present-day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran.

Under Ahmad Shah and his successors, particularly his son Taimur Shah and grandson Zaman Shah, the Durrani Dynasty maintained a degree of stability and centralization, albeit with occasional internal conflicts and external pressures from neighbouring powers. The dynasty's rule saw the establishment of diplomatic relations with various European powers, notably the British and the Russians, as well as efforts to modernize the administration and military.

However, the Durrani Dynasty faced significant challenges, including tribal rivalries, foreign invasions, and internal strife over succession. By the early 19th century, the empire began to weaken, and Afghanistan fell into a period of fragmentation and instability after Ahmad Shah's death in 1772. Despite its eventual decline and dissolution in 1856, the Durrani Dynasty contributed to the nation's identity and shaped its political landscape for centuries to come.
