Mahmud Hotaki, also known as Ghilzai, son of Mir Vais Khan, a Pashtun ruler of the Hotak Dynasty, was born in 1697. Mahmud launched an expedition against Soltan Hosayn in 1722, and after defeating Hosayn's forces in the Battle of Golnabad, he encircled Isfahan and blocked all the roads leading to the city. The siege lasted from March to October 1722 and ended by the abdiction of Soltan Hosayn.

Mahmud was then enthroned on October 23, 1722, as the new Shah of Persia. He was killed by Ashraf Khan on April 22, 1725, at the age of 28.
