Lot description:

'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Radi. AH 322-329 / AD 934-940. AV Dinar (22.9mm, 4.43 g, 5h). Al-Mawsil mint. Dated AH 327 (AD 938/9). Obverse field: Abu'l-Fadl bin / amir al-mu'minin in fourth and fifth lines. Bernardi type 289 (not recorded for this mint); Album 254.2. Good VF, minor edge marks. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished and believed unique.

This type, with the name of the caliphal heir Abu'l-Fadl, but without that of the chief amir, is only known for the Iraqi mints of Basra, Kufa, Wasit and Baghdad. It is unsurprising that coins of this type should also have been struck at Mosul, which is similarly located in Iraq.

Bernardi records no dinars of any type for al-Radi from the mint of al-Mawsil.

Estimate: 15000 USD
