| Lot description: 'Abbasid Caliphate. Al-Mu'tasim. AH 218-227 / AD 833-842. AV Dinar (19.1mm, 3.97 g, 6h). Dimashq mint. Dated AH 226 (AD 840/1). Cf. Bernardi 151Ge (this date not recorded); cf. V.L. Nummus OG auction 11 (23 March 2019), lot 368 (same dies). Fine, edge and surface marks. Excessively rare. Unknown to Bernardi, the only other recorded dinar from this mint and date appears to be the piece sold in 2019 (for €3,800 hammer), cited above. Another dinar dated AH 226 and described as being from Damascus was evidently a coin of Surra man ra'a (St James's Auctions 55, 26 January 2022, lot 16) Estimate: 1500 USD |  |
