Lot description: 'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Rashid. AH 170-193 / AD 786-809. AV Dinar (19mm, 4.03 g, 4h). Without mint-name (struck at San'a). Dated AH 173 (AD 789/90). Reverse field: al-Ghitr- / Muhammad / rasul / Allah / -if. Cf Bernardi 59 (dated AH 171 and additionally naming Harun al-Rashid); Album -. Good VF, matte surfaces, lightly clipped. Of the highest rarity, apparently unpublished and believed unique. The individual named on the reverse of this coin is al-Ghitrif b. 'Ata, brother of the celebrated queen Khayzuran. Since Khayzuran was the wife of al-Mahdi and mother of both al-Hadi and al-Rashid, al-Ghitrif was related to no fewer than three 'Abbasid caliphs. He was also the uncle of Zubayda, Harun al-Rashid's wife. Al-Ghitrif served as governor of Yemen from AH 170-173, and was later appointed to govern Khurasan, Sijistan and Jurjan in AH 175. This latter appointment was not. a success, and Harun removed him from his post in AH 176. Al-Ghitrif was killed in Khurasan during the following year. Estimate: 10000 USD |
