Lot description: Spanish Netherlands Brabant. Philip IV of Spain "Merenstein" Ducaton 1640 XF (Saltwater Effect), Antwerp mint, Dav-4454. 27.95gm. Salvaged from the "Merenstein" (sunk in 1702 off Jutten Island, South Africa). Softly struck and lightly corroded. Accompanied by COA. The Dutch East Indiaman Merenstein was loaded with several chests of silver coins for trade in the East Indies when a reef off Jutten Island torn the ship into pieces. Contemporary salvaging wasn't fruitful, the wreck later re-discovered and salvaged in the 1970's when thousands of Dutch silver coins were retrieved, with much of the treasure yet to be found. https://coins.ha.com/itm/spanish-netherlands/spanish-netherlands-brabant-philip-iv-of-spain-merenstein-ducaton-1640-xf-saltwater-effect-/a/61364-21533.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchives-WorldCoins-61364-03172024 HID02906262019 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved |
