Lot description: British West Indies British Colony. 4-Piece lot of Uncertified Cut 8 Reales (c. 18th Century) XF (Saltwater Effect), 1) Mexico Charles III 8 Reales 1774 Mo-FM, 17.32gm. 2) Spain Ferdinand VII 8 Reales 1816 MA-GJ, 17.56gm. 3) Spain Ferdinand VII 8 Reales, Madrid, 17.89gm. 4) Spain Ferdinand VII 8 Reales, Madrid, 10.24gm. cf. KM466 (for "host" coin). A very intriguing group showing different cuts, one seemingly done with proper scissors. The light corrosion from an unidentified wreck is present across the cuts, dating the regulation to before they got lost. Pridmore only lists cut and not stamped types under Barbados, but the way these pieces were regulated does not match the known 1/2 Dollar: 8 Reales cut in half (valued at Three Shilling, Four Bits) at about 13.55gm, these weighting approximately 30% over. Perhaps unofficially regulated, but with an obvious pattern considering the larger ones have an almost exact weight despite the uneven cuts, with the smaller piece equivalent to the "missing weight" observed in the other three. Without a doubt worthy of further research. Sold as is, no returns.
