MEXICO. Defense of Guaymas Centennial Gold Medal, 1954. Mexico City Mint. NGC MS-64.
Grove-647. Diameter: 37mm. Weight: 41.19 gms. Mintage: 680. Struck to celebrate the 100th anniversary of General Jose Maria Yanez's successful defense of the city of Guaymas from the French on July 13, 1854. Obverse: Victory (left) crowning bust of Yanez (right), who is facing slightly left; below them, ship sailing left with mountains in background, all above wreath; Reverse: "COMMEMORACION DE LA HEROICA DEFENSA DE GUAYMAS" around central coat of arms, flanked by the dates "1854 - 1954". A medal in rich, honey-toned gold, with a reverse that nears prooflike quality.
