| Lot description: (g) USA, National Commemorative Series, Gold Dollar, $1, 1904, 'Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition at Portland', Philadelphia, by Charles E. Barber, LEWIS-CLARK EXPOSITION PORTLAND ORE. - 1904 - bare head of Meriweather Lewis left, rev. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - ONE DOLLAR, bare head of William Clark left, edge milled, 1.65g [25.4grns], 6h (Friedberg 100; KM 121; PCGS 7447; NGC BYLF), a lustrous gem, choice mint state, and highly sought-after in this state, only 10,025 sold of an original mintage of 25,028 pieces. The Lewis and Clark Exposition gold dollar is the only American coin to be "two-headed", with a portrait of one of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806) leaders on each side. The coins were, for the most part, sold to the public by numismatic promoter Farran Zerbe, who had also vended the Louisiana Purchase Exposition dollar. As he was unable to sell much of the issue, surplus coins were melted by the Mint at Philadelphia, the only federal mint to produce the two-year issue. The original mintage for 1904 had been 25,000 pieces plus 28 for the Assay Commission, but 15,003 remained unsold and were melted. 1905 proved even worse with 35,000 struck plus 41 for the Assay Commission, of which 25,000 were melted.
