The Chinese inscription on the obverse translates as "Army Commander Tang Changjun Fuyuan", and on the reverse as "Support the Republic commemorative coin, worth 3 Mace and 6 Candareens."

When the President of China, Yuan Shikai, proclaimed himself Emperor of China in December 1915, General Tang Jiyao (Governor of Yunnan Province) declared independence, along with the support of generals Cai E and Li Liejun, amongst others. Tang quickly became a prominent leader as the head of Sun Yat-Sen's Nationalist army during the National Protection War of 1915-16. After victory, Tang helped Yat-Sen establish the Constitutional Protection Movement, before setting up his own branch organisation, the Yunnan People's Party. Tang continued to be a leading voice in the nationalist movement of China, ordering this coin to be struck in late 1917 to celebrate his devotion to the cause.
