Lot description: MAURITIUS: George IV, 1820-1830, AR 25 sous, ND (1822), KM-1, Cr-31, Lec-17, struck at the Calcutta Mint, typical adjustment marks for this type, F-VF, ex Almer H. Orr III Collection. Although the legends and denominations are in French, these coins are actually British. Because of the agreement to which Mauritius was ceded to Britain, the coinage and language had to remain French. The 25 and 50 sous denominations allowed for them to easily translate into the British monetary system and the Spanish dollar, which was the main circulating currency alongside the rupee (2 rupees to 1 dollar). Estimate: 75-100 USD Starting price: 60 USD |
