GERMANY: Kaiserreich, AE medal (77.74g), 1915, Kienast-168, 57mm bronze cast medal of "Prometheus on the Caucasus" by Karl Goetz, crowned bust of Grand Duke Nikolayevich right with Cyrillic legend and date "1915" in field behind neck // Nicholas as Prometheus chained to a rock while eagle tears out his liver, with second eagle at left, plain edge, Choice EF. At the end of 1915 the Grand Duke was appointed commander-in-chief and viceroy in the Caucasus. While he was officially in command, General Yudenich was the driving force in the Russian Caucasus Army, so the Grand Duke concentrated on civilian administration. Their opponent was the Ottoman Empire. During this time, the Russian army sent an expeditionary force to Persia to link up with the British troops. Also in 1916, the Russian army captured the fortress of Erzerum, the port of Trebizond, and the city of Erzincan. The Turks responded with an offensive of their own. The battles around Lake Van vacillated back and forth, but ultimately proved inconclusive.
