RUSSIA. Catherine II/Peace with the Sublime Porte (Ottoman Empire) Gold Medal, 1791. St. Petersburg Mint. NGC AU-58.
Bit-Ж1395 (R2); Dia-225.9 (R3). Diameter: 22mm; Weight: 4.12 gms. Commemorating the peace with the Ottoman Empire at Yassi and the formal annexation of Crimea. Obverse: Ekaterina cypher (Ɛ II); crown above; all within wreath; Reverse: Legend and date in four lines. Lightly toned and with a subtle degree of wear across the highest points. A VERY RARE and important medallic issue, this specimen from late in the reign of Catherine "the Great" recounts the peace established with the Ottoman Empire, here referred to in the Cyrillic as "Porta" on account of the Empire's association with the Sublime Porte--a synecdoche for the Turkish central government. Of further consequence, it marks a more formal annexation of the importantly-situated peninsula, as opposed to more recent unrecognized seizures and occupations.
