ISLAMIC, Persia (Post-Seljuk). Atabegs of Khuzestan. Husam al-Din Aydughdu, AH 550-570 / AD 1155-1175. Dinar (Gold, 21 mm, 2.00 g, 6 h), ʿAskar, AH 5xx. Citing the ʿAbbasid caliph al-Mustadi bi-amr Allah (AH 566-575 / AD 1170-1180), 'lā ilāha illā / Allāh waḥdahū / lā sharīka lahū / al-Mustaḍī bi amr / Allāh' ('There is no deity but Allah, the One, there is no partner to Him. al-Mustadi bi-amr Allah' in Arabic); above, to left and right, 'Ḥusām – al-Dīn – Ayādughdī' ('Husam al-Din Aydughdu' in Arabic); in the margin, 'bism Allāh ḍuriba hādhā al-dīnār bi ʿAskar sana ... wa khamsa miʾa' ('In the name of Allah. This dinar was struck in ʿAskar in the year 5xx' in Arabic). Rev. Citing the Great Seljuq Arslan ibn Tughril (AH 556-571 / AD 1161-1176) and his brother, Muhammad, 'Muḥammad rasūl Allāh / al-sulṭān al-aʿẓam Abu/'l-Muẓẓaffar Arslān ibn Ṭughril / al-sulṭān al-muʿaẓẓam Abū / Shujāʿ Muḥammad ibn Ṭughril' ('Muhammad is the messenger of Allah. The supreme sultan Abu'l-Muzaffar Arslan son of Tughril. The great sultan Abu Shujaʿ Muhammad son of Tughril' in Arabic); title of Arslan ibn Tughril to right, 'Muʿizz al-Dunyā wa al-Dīn' (in Arabic); title of Muhammad ibn Tughril to left, 'Rukn al-Dunyā wa al-Dīn' (in Arabic). Album 1921K. Extremely rare. Struck from worn and corroded dies, otherwise, very fine.
