Lot description: China Qing Dynasty. Sheng Zu (1662-1722) Set Coin Charm ND Certified 82(07) by Gong Bo Grading, Kaifeng mint (Honan Province), cf. Hartill-22.109 (for coin type). 27.5mm 5.3gm. A whimsical and sought-after emission for ceremonial and celebration purposes. The Poem Coins, or Set Coins, were charms which could be arranged to form a Poem combining the 20 characters of the different mints. Although the poem has no particular meaning, this has given the coins amuletic properties. According to Schjöth: "If genuine and placed together, they have the power of expelling evil influences and of preventing fires. Their genuineness according to popular belief can be tested by placing them, when strung together, on the top of a chicken coop; If genuine, they will prevent the cocks from crowing in the morning!"
