Lot description: China Republic Sun Yat-sen silver Specimen Italian Pattern "Junk" Dollar Year 18 (1929)-R SP62 PCGS, Rome mint, KM-Pn98, L&M-91, Kann-614a, WS-0136A. Perhaps the scarcest example from this highly contested Pattern series, whose inception by the Chinese Ministry of Finance continues to ripple through the numismatic collecting community to this day with the iconic effigy of Sun Yat-sen. On offer is a coveted Italian concept of Attilio Motti, one of Europe's most prominent 20th century engravers, whose skilled hand clearly crafted the sensitively rendered portrait and "Junk" that are eponymous for the type. One of two Italian products submitted for consideration, the second having removed the Rome mintmark and engraver's name, which find's itself more readily available on the market than the example at hand. Immense flash and vibrant polychromatic tone percolate across the expanses, lending gentle movement to the reverse waves. Each detail endures as crisp and accurate as the day it was struck, with only light wisps to define the grade. With specimens of this type coming to market generally one every few years, the last being in May of 2020, we can only wait with anticipation to see where the hammer may fall.
