ITALIAN (ca. early 16th Century)Divus Julius Caesar. Concave Plaquette. Bronze, 42mm. DIVI.IVLI, Laureate and draped bust of Caesar right, SPQR on the clasp of his cloak, lituus behind, star before his forehead. Molinier 55: Kress 270; Bange 170-4; Poznán 11; Scaglia I, 17. It is believed that the model for this plaquette is an antique carnelian intaglio owned by Cardinal Francesco Gonzaga. On his death in 1483, the intaglio went to Alfonso d'Aragona, Duke of Calabria. This popular plaquette was also produced as an incuse image and used to impress the bindings of fine and costly books (vide A. Hobson "Plaquettes on Bookbindings, SHA 22, Washington, D.C. 1989, pp. 165-173; and fig.1). Pope-Hennessy 270. Handsome brown patina.
