Lot description:

AMADIO AMADEI, called AMADIO DA MILANO (active in Ferrara, 1437-ca.1483)Leonello d'Este (1407-1450), Marquis of Ferrera, Modena and Reggio Emilia 1441 Medal. Bronze, 45.3mm. LEONENNVS MARCHIO ESTENSIS DOMINVS, floral spray stops, Bust right, rev. AMADE MEDIOLAN ARIFEX FECIT (incised and weak), A lynx, ears up, seated left on a square cushion, blindfolded by a kerchief which flutters and falls behind. Hill 68; Armand I, 16.1; Cordellier 269; cf. Kress 8. The blindfolded lynx is a symbol of statecraft, a motif which appear on the reverse of a medal by Pisanello, and a medal signed by Nicholaus (which also has the legend: Quae videns ne vide ("Seeing these things, do not see them", i.e. diplomatic selective vision). As Pisanello's medal also has Leonello's title as Marquis of Ferrara, Amadio's and Nicholaus' medals both appear to pre-date Pisanello's and would then have been made sometime before Leonello succeeded his father Niccolò III. Evidently cast from a mold taken from the specimen in Berlin. Very Fine. CNG eAuction 360, September 30, 2015, lot 604 - $1,975.From the Neil A. Goodman Collection.

Estimate: $1000 - $2000
