Romania, Moldavia (Principality). Petru III (Petru Aron) AR 1/2 Groat. 1451-1452 / 1454-1457. Facing bull's head; star above, rosette and crescent flanking / Cross moline within shield; crown above, D to left, uncertain symbol to right. Cf. MBR type II, 602-3. 0.44g, 13mm, 11h.

Very Fine. Extremely Rare; none others on CoinArchives.

Petru Aron was the last son of Alexandru I cel Bun (his mother is unknown) and ascended the throne after assassinating his brother, Bogdan II. His rule was constantly interrupted by challenges from Alexăndrel (son of Iliaș I) and he was eventually defeated by Bogdan II's son Ştefan cel Mare in 1457. Petru Aron is known to be the first ruler of Moldavia to pay tribute to the Ottoman Empire and is thought to have issued new coinage on the old design from a higher quantity of silver.
