MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1618-Mo D/F. Mexico City Mint. Philip III. PCGS Genuine--Salt Water Damage, VF Details.
cf. KM-37.2; Cal-762. Weight: 9.88 gms. This pleasing Mexican Cob was recovered from the Santa Margarita shipwreck. Though its surfaces show moderate corrosion and a large chunk of the planchet is missing, much original detail remains. To the left of the Habsburg shield on the obverse, there is the bold mintmark of Mexico City. Below it, a distinct "D over F" assayer mark is visible. While no date appears on the flan, this distinct over-assayer mark dates the coin decisively to 1618. The reverse displays a satisfying Florenzada cross with castles and lions. An overall very appealing example from this famous treasure find.

MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1654-Mo. Mexico City Mint, Assayer P. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Salt Water Damage, VF Details.
KM-38; Cal-1072. Weight: 10.69 gms. Despite this Cob's rough surfaces and dark corrosion, it retains its most important details. The date, mintmark, and assayer all appear quite clearly on the left side of the obverse. Most of the reverse castles and lions are intact along with a portion of the outer legend. This example exhibits much more detail than would be expected from a salvaged coin with saltwater corrosion of this severity. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.

MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1556-98)-Mo. Mexico City Mint. Philip II. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details.
KM-36; Cal-Type-158 Var. Weight: 13.76 gms. A charming Mexico City Cob of an unlisted variation with the Arabic numeral denomination shown twice, one each side of the central Habsburg shield. While much of the outer legend is cut off due to the compact flan, the reverse displays a bold central cross with castles and lions. A small spot of verdigris corrosion is noted on the rim, accounting for the designation. An appealing example with interesting details. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.

MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1556-98). Mexico City Mint. Philip II. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, EF Details.
KM-36; Cal Type-158. Weight: 13.46 gms. This Cob offers great peripheral detail. The obverse displays the king's full name and ordinal "PIIILIPVS II", and the reverse contains the full word "HISPANIARVM". The mintmark appears somewhat faint but legible to the left of the pleasing Habsburg shield, and the castles and lions are decently presented. The surfaces are somewhat rough with a few spots of black corrosive patina, and there is a notable flan crack around 11 o'clock on the obverse. Despite these drawbacks, the coin remains appealing and satisfyingly detailed. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.

MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1610-Mo. Mexico City Mint, Assayer F. Philip III. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details.
KM-37.2; Cal-755. Weight: 13.60 gms. This charming Mexico City Cob shows a bold mintmark, assayer, and full date on its obverse to the left of the complete Habsburg shield. The reverse is struck somewhat off-center, thus revealing a large portion of the outer legend including the title "REX". The castles and lions are slightly weak but satisfyingly complete. A small spot of corrosion on the reverse rim accounts for the designation, but hardly detracts from this well-detailed and attractively toned piece. MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1612-Mo. Mexico City Mint, Assayer F. Philip III. PCGS Genuine--Corrosion Removed, EF Details.
KM-37.2; Cal-757. Weight: 10.58 gms. This charming Cob shows a mintmark, assayer, and denomination on the obverse along with a truncated but distinct date. The reverse shows evidence of corrosion, much of which has been carefully removed. The coin was in all likelihood salvaged from a shipwreck, which would also account for the unusually light weight. Nonetheless, it remains a pleasing example with no shortage of eye appeal or pertinent details. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.
