An interesting fragmented 4 Reales piece. Though it has lost a portion of its planchet to corrosion, this Cob retains identifiable details, especially on the reverse. Distinct castles and lions appear on the upper portion of the central cross, and the truncated final digits of the date are readable. The surfaces show the typical saltwater damage seen in other pieces from the Atocha shipwreck. Includes original Certificate of Authenticity from Treasure Salvors, Inc. A wonderful cob recovered from the Atocha shipwreck of 1622. Despite the saltwater damage caused by its centuries under the sea, this piece is replete with identifiable details. On the obverse, the Habsburg shield is quite well-centered and retains satisfying detail. Beside it, the mintmark and initial from this SCARCE assayer remain quite clear. The reverse displays enough of all four digits of the date to positively attribute this coin to the year 1618. An excellent piece of shipwreck treasure. Recovered from the Nuestra Senora de Atocha wreck, this Cob exhibits the shiny and corroded surfaces typical of shipwreck finds. While most of its detail has been lost, the clear outline of the Habsburg shield is visible on the obverse, along with the Potosi mintmark to the left. Most fortunately, the reverse displays an unmistakable date above a distinct central cross. A pleasing dated example from this famous sunken treasure find. This SCARCE shipwreck cob is heavily corroded from saltwater, but enough detail remains to attribute the coin to the tenure of the assayer Tapia. The reverse is slightly better preserved, offering clear views of the castles and lions, along with a fair portion of the legend. Most fortunately, just enough of the final "8" remains to date the coin to 1618. An interesting piece recovered from the famous Atocha wreck.
