BOLIVIA. Cob 8 Reales, ND (1586-89)-P A/B. Potosi Mint; Assayer Juan Alvares Reinaltes (A). Philip II. PCGS EF-40.
KM-5.1; Cal-673. Weight: 26.98 gms. This beautiful 8 Reales piece, struck on a full and rather round flan, displays an interesting over-assayer mark. The obverse shows a sharp mintmark, albeit slightly doubled. The assayer's mark exhibits the distinct features of both the "B" of assayer Juan de Ballesteros Narvaez and the "A" of his successor, Juan Alvarez Reinaltes. The denomination is legible on the right, despite minor muddling of the "III". Nearly all sections of the complex Habsburg crown are intact and clear. Along the rim, the full name of the monarch is readable. The reverse was struck several times and its details suffer as a result, though the castles still present nicely and the octolobes are nearly complete. The coin is pleasingly toned with pewter-gray hues on its high points and a tasteful dark tone surrounding the devices, allowing the details to pop. This piece is dripping with eye appeal and would be a fitting addition to a sophisticated collection. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.

KM-4.2; Cal-522. Weight: 12.10 gms. A rather attractive shipwreck cob. Despite the noted saltwater damage, this piece is well-centered and displays a highly legible mintmark and assayer's initial. BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1575-76)-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Miguel Garcia (M). Philip II. PCGS Genuine--Salt Water Damage, AU Details.
KM-4.1; Cal-521. Weight: 13.07 gms. This cob is most likely a shipwreck find, which accounts for the grade designation. Despite that, the coin must have been very lightly handled before its loss. The obverse shield shows much more detail than typical for a saltwater damaged coin. The denomination, mintmark, and assayer initial are clearly presented. The full, broad flan fully displays the legends on both sides. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.

BOLIVIA. Cob 4 Reales, ND (1651-52)-P. Potosi Mint; Assayer Antonio de Ergueta (E). Philip IV. NGC VF-35; Countermark: AU Details.
KM-17B; Cal-Type-279. Weight: 13.48 gms. An intriguing Cob with much individuality and originality. Although this is certainly a 4 Reales piece, its obverse was struck with an 8 Reales die. The unmistakable numeral "8" appears above the assayer's initial to the right of the Habsburg shield. On the left of the shield, a bold "crown alone" countermark appears. The reverse shows some flatness and does not retain any of the peripheral legends, but shows well-struck and handsome castles and lions. The coin presents sharp details and wholesome surfaces, deeply toned to a beautiful pewter gray. A VERY RARE coin in this condition, almost certainly unique with this mismatched obverse die. Exceptionally interesting and attractive. To view all items from the Pat Johnson Collection, click here.
