Peter I silver Novodel "Beard Tax" Token 1705-Dated MS62 NGC, Kadashevsky (Moscow) mint, Bitk-Ж3898 (R3), Brekke-7, Rudenko-b.12. Cyrillic date (≠AΨΕ). To Europeanize Russia after his travels to Europe, as the reason and purpose of these issues. Among other reforms, Peter ordered Russian men to shave their beards to be in conformity with what he observed in Europe. Met by much resistance, as a compromise, Peter allowed the rich to keep their beards for a substantial yearly payment and as proof of paying the tax they were given a token to carry to prove they had paid. A rare silver striking of this ever-popular type, this piece boasts a lovely aged gunmetal tone with multi-colored flares of accented splendor, struck slightly off center on reverse.
