GREAT BRITAIN. Abdication of Edward VIII Gold Medal, 1936. NGC MS-66.
BHM-4277; Eimer-Unlisted. By L. E. Pinches. Mintage: 100. Obverse: KING EDWARD VIII, crowned and robed bust right, wearing Chain of the Garter; Reverse: ASCENDED / THE THRONE / JAN 20TH 1936 / ABDICATED / DEC 10TH / 1936 in six lines; all within wreath. A VERY RARE medal, this entrancing Gem celebrates an abdication rather than a coronation, as Edward VIII was forced off the throne when his proposed marriage to Wallace Simpson caused scandal in 1930s Britain. Given the nature of the medal, this piece serves as a wonderful addition to any collection of coronation medals, as it provides an example of a monarch who never was coronated.
Estimate: $3000 - $6000
