MOESIA INFERIOR, Odessus. Gordian III. AD 238-244. Æ Pentassaria (27mm, 11.26 g). Confronted busts of Gordian III and Serapis / Prize urn with two palms inscribed ΔΑΡZΑΛΕΙΑ. Mouchmov 1675. VF, attractive green and brown patina.

A Thracian chthonic god of health and vitality, Darzalas was the Great God of Odessus, worshiped there with a temple and a cult in his honor. Gordian III possibly attended the games held in his honor, the Darzaleia, in 238, which is commemorated on this coin.
