The Anthony Milavic Collection of Ancient Games Coins

Agonistic Tables

Four-legged - seen in perspective

PHOENICIA. Sidon. Elagabalus, 218-222. 8 Assaria (Bronze, 32 mm, 24.10 g, 6 h), in celebration of the Sacred Purple-Edged Eiselastic Games. [IMP CAESAR M AV A]NTONINVS AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Elagabalus to right, seen from behind. Rev. AV PI SIDON COL METR (retrograde) // IER PERIPOR / ISELASTI Draped table shown in perspective, bearing two prize crowns, each containing a palm branch; on ground below, five apples and a two-handled vase. Cf. BMC 279-282 (different reverse legend). Cf. Rouvier 1514-1515 (different reverse legend). RPC VI Online, 8376. Extremely rare, only the die-identicle Berlin example was known to the RPC. Both sides struck slightly off center, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of Major Anthony F. Milavic, USMC (Ret.), acquired from Amphora Coins in January 2006.

Eiselastic Games entitled their winners to triumphantly enter their home cities through a hole in the wall - a special, one-time gate cut in the city's wall. This certainly seems rather excessive; of course, if a city was rebuilding its walls anyway...
